Description
Oat milk is easy to make and only has a few, wholesome ingredients! Much less expensive to make homemade than to buy at the store too! This version is vegan friendly and free of dairy and refined sugars. Just use certified gluten-free oats to make gluten-free.
Ingredients
- *1 1/4 cups rolled oats (make sure they’re certified gluten-free, if needed)
- 4 cups purified water (can use less water for creamier/thicker milk)
- pinch of salt
Optional add-ins for flavor:
- 1–2 tablespoons maple syrup, coconut sugar, or other sweetener of choice (use more or less to taste)
and/or
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
and/or
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Add oats, water, salt, and any optional add-ins to your high-speed blender. Blend on medium–high speed for 15–20 seconds. (Double blend time for steel cut oats)
- Blend time may vary depending on your blender. I have a Blendtec
and it blends things pretty quickly.
- This short time is not meant to thoroughly blend the oats as over-blending makes the oat milk more thick and slimy.
- Taste and adjust flavors/sweetness as desired.
- Don’t allow blended mixture to sit for too long before straining or oats will absorb water and become mushy, making the milk more slimy. After blending, pour the oat milk into a clean kitchen towel/flour sack
or nut milk bag
fitted into a sieve placed over a large pitcher or bowl. Bring up each side of the towel, twist, and squeeze the milk into the bowl/pitcher catching the large oat pieces in the towel. If milk gets too hard to strain, switching to a new towel halfway through may be helpful.
- You can discard the oat pulp or blend it into your smoothie or muffin/bread batter for added fiber.
- Pour filtered oat milk into a glass jar and refrigerate. Milk may separate as it sits, so just give it a quick shake/stir before serving. If milk is too ‘slimy’ or thick for your liking, stir in a little extra filtered water until it reaches the consistency you prefer.
- Homemade oat milk is delicious by the glass, over cereal/granola, in smoothies, baked goods or as a creamer in coffee. Oat milk can thicken and become gelatinous if heated by itself, but I’ve heated my coffee with a splash of oat milk added for 30 seconds in the microwave with no problem.
Notes
*Using dry oats to blend makes milk less “slimy” than soaked oats. You can soak whole oats but it does make the milk thicker and may have a more slimy mouth-feel. This is not a problem for some who prefer the richer flavor.
–Can also use steel cut oats soaked for at least 30 minutes, then rinsed and drained well. This milk is thicker/richer tasting but can also have slightly slimy mouth-feel.
