Heart-Shaped Berry Turnovers

These cute heart-shaped berry turnovers are a simple and delicious treat to make for your loved one(s). Use your favorite berry or a combo of berries for the filling!

Heart-Shaped Berry Turnovers
I like making little treats for my family around the holidays. It’s not only fun, but homemade treats just taste so much better than store bought ones. These little turnovers couldn’t be easier to make thanks to pre-made puff pastry. I always keep a box in my freezer for tarts and turnovers. You can whip them up in less than half an hour and they taste like they’re from a bakery.

These are inspired by my berry turnovers but the recipe is scaled for these mini pockets. I also included my go-to powdered sugar glaze that I like to whip up for these types of turnovers, but the original recipe has a cream cheese glaze that’s naturally sweetened, if you’re interested.

I used frozen mixed berries to make this simple filling, but only because I always have a large bag in my freezer for smoothies. You can use fresh or frozen fruit—think raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, peaches, or any other soft fruit. Or if you’re in a pinch for time, canned pie filling will also work.

For the shape, you can do traditional folded squares (triangular shaped), rectangles, squares, circles, or a simple cutter of your choice. I used a heart shaped cutter since Valentine’s Day is coming up. Just roll out the puff pastry a bit, then cut. If you’re using a cutter, like I did, you want to cut shapes out as close together as possible. The scraps cannot be used again, like cookie dough. But don’t worry, you can brush the scraps with melted butter and sprinkle on some cinnamon sugar for a tasty little snack and to keep from wasting it.

These turnovers are simple, delicious, and perfect for Valentine’s Day! I hope you give them a try and enjoy them as much as we did!

Description

These cute heart-shaped berry turnovers are a simple and delicious treat to make for your loved one(s). Use your favorite berry or a combo of berries for the filling!

Ingredients

Scale

Berry Turnovers:

  • 1 cup berry of choice (fresh or frozen. I used mixed frozen berries.)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or maple syrup (can use less or more to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice or water
  • 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch or arrowroot
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed (Can also use your favorite pie crust)
  • 1 tablespoon milk of choice, optional
  • coarse sugar, for sprinkling on pastry (optional)

Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon melted butter, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2–3 teaspoons milk of choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400ºF. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Place berries and sugar into a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until berries have begun to release their juices. Whisk together orange juice and cornstarch in a small bowl until smooth; add to berry mixture.
  3. Continue to cook berries until sauce has thickened. Remove and let cool.
  4. Place thawed puff pastry on a sheet of parchment paper and begin to roll out an inch or two larger. Use a medium-large cookie cutter of choice (I used a heart shaped cutter) or if you don’t have a cutter, cut into even squares. My cutter was about 2.5–3″ wide.
  5. Take one cut out and use your finger or a small brush to line the outer edges with water. Place a spoonful of the cooled filling into the center of the pastry.
  6. Top with another piece of pastry and press edges to seal. Use the tines of a fork to crimp the edges together.
  7. Place turnovers on lined baking sheet a couple of inches apart. Brush each turnover with milk and sprinkle with coarse sugar.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown. Check halfway through baking and turn the pan around if one side is browning faster than the other.
  9. Drizzle glaze over each one and serve. Makes about 6 turnovers.

Glaze:

  1. Mix together powdered sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and just enough milk to give it a pourable consistency. Start with less milk and add more only if needed. Drizzle over baked turnovers.
  • Prep Time: 20 min
  • Cook Time: 12 minutes

What would you suggest utilizing for a gluten free, dairy free puff pastry?

Hi Justine, some healthy grocery stores sell gluten free puff pastry and I think you can buy it online as well. I also found this recipe online that looks good, but I haven’t tried it yet: https://gfjules.com/recipes/gluten-free-puff-pastry-recipe/
Let me know how it goes if you try it! 🙂

This sounds delicious!! Unfortunately I’m allergic to orange juice – would another fruit juice (maybe apple?) work instead?

Hi Rachel! The orange juice just complements the flavor of the berries, but you can just use water instead. It’s really only needed to make a slurry with the cornstarch, so using water is fine. Hope you enjoy them! 🙂
